Inside the Ara Pacis Museum, an immersive experience comes to life, designed to give visitors a sense of the monument’s original appearance and to bring back to life the colours, atmosphere and significance of the Augustan age. Visitors are guided along a narrative route divided into “sequences”, which reveal the monument’s many facets: from the bucolic setting of the Campus Martius to the founding myths linked to Aeneas and the origins of Rome, from the processions of the imperial family to the symbolism of the Pax Augusta, right through to the plant frieze that changes colour before the public’s eyes and the story of the monument’s neglect and modern rediscovery.
