Vanishings explores the intimacy and torment of desire through two poignant works: Leos Janacek’s The Diary of One Who Disappeared and Thomas Adès’ Novenyék. This project delves into the twists and turns of love, which, when it becomes dizzying, can lead to ecstasy or loss. In The Diary of One Who Disappears, Janáček tells the story of a young peasant’s obsession, ready to abandon everything for a woman, in a deeply moving musical confession. A century later, Adès weaves a musical response to this torment, where nature becomes a mirror for beings doomed to oblivion. The Vanishings project does not simply juxtapose these works: it makes them interact. The staging and musical direction seek to weave a dramatic thread between these fragments of stories. Little by little, Janáček’s tenor voice seems to summon Adès’ songs, like reminiscences or echoes of the future.
